£140 Million Transformation of Cardiff Central Station Set to Begin
Cardiff Central railway station is about to undergo one of the most significant upgrades in its history, as a £140 million redevelopment programme receives full approval.
The investment marks a major step forward for Wales’ rail network, promising a modern, accessible and future-ready gateway to the capital.
The refurbishment will focus on modernising the station while carefully preserving its architectural heritage. Among the most notable improvements is a much larger concourse designed to ease overcrowding and support long-term passenger growth. The plans will improve passenger flow throughout the building, strengthen accessibility for travellers with reduced mobility, and provide better links for those arriving by bike thanks to upgraded cycle storage.
Travellers can also look forward to enhanced waiting areas and an expanded retail offering; key features intended to bring the station in line with the expectations of a busy, 21st-century transport hub.
Importantly, Cardiff Central will remain open throughout the construction period, ensuring minimal disruption for the millions who use the station each year.
A Joint Investment in Wales’ Future
Transport for Wales is leading the transformation, backed by investment from the Department for Transport, Cardiff Capital Region and the Welsh Government. With the full business case now approved, work is expected to begin next year in partnership with the appointed design and build contractor.
The project forms part of a wider commitment to improving rail infrastructure across the country. A newly revitalised Wales Rail Board, meeting in Cardiff for the first time, will oversee how rail funding is prioritised, review progress on current projects, and shape plans for future developments. Later this month, Transport for Wales will also publish Today, Tomorrow, Together, a new vision document outlining the long-term direction for rail travel in Wales.
Strengthening Connections and Supporting Growth
Leaders involved in the project emphasise that the upgrade is essential to supporting Cardiff’s continued growth. As a major hub within the South Wales Metro, Cardiff Central plays a vital role in connecting residents, commuters and visitors with key destinations across Wales and beyond. The redevelopment is expected to improve capacity significantly, an important consideration as the city prepares to welcome major events such as the UEFA European Football Championships in 2028.
Rail industry partners, including Network Rail Wales & Borders, have also welcomed the decision. The transformation aims to deliver a safer, more accessible and more welcoming station for all passengers, while ensuring the facility continues to serve future generations.
A Modern Gateway to the Capital
Once complete, the revamped Cardiff Central will reflect the ambitions of a dynamic and growing capital city. With improved infrastructure, increased capacity, and customer-focused features, the station is set to become a vital part of the region’s sustainable economic future.
