  1. We Don’t Talk About Bruno - Gaitan/Castillo/Adassa/Feliz

The soundtrack “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is from the computer-animated fantasy film Encanto. The movie tells the story of a teenager Mirabel, who is born into a Colombian family that possesses magical powers. However, Mirable doesn't have any magical powers; she is seen as an outsider and is treated differently. She joins her Aunt Pepa, Uncle Felix and siblings to sing of her vilified Uncle Bruno.

It is the 5th song from an animated disney movie to place in the top 5 on the hot 100 chart. The song topped the UK’s Official Singles Chart making history, as the first ever original Disney song to do so in the charts history. The Encanto soundtrack climbed to number 1 on the billboard that was dated January 15, 2022. TikTok plays a major factor in the song's success, with millions of users singing along to the song or acting out scenes, with videos highlighting its choreography and Latino representation.
 

 

  1. Peru - Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran

Fireboy DML released the original “Peru” on 16th July 2021. Then six months later he released the international remix featuring a verse from Ed Sheeran. Fireboy has previously stated that it wasn't until his trips to the states in 2021, that he decided to lead a different kind of life, stating that prior to releasing his song, he didn't go out and was always careful with his relationships. Fireboy is from Nigeria and is a singer-songwriter who told himself during his trip to America he would open up and leave the cage he had built around himself. He states that is what the song is about, he claims he was in the booth for 35 minutes and told his story through a feel good song.

Ed Sheeran released a raunchy, upbeat song called “shivers” on 10th september 2021, this would become the second single on his equals album. Ed Sheeran wrote this song as soon as his Divide tour had ended, this being in the late summer of 2019. He states that he had rented a farm in Suffolk, where he later set up a studio with his collaborators for a fortnight and said it was “to see what happened”. Ed Sheeran performed this song live for the first time at the MTV Video Music Awards in september of 2021.

Ed Sheeran released ‘Bad Habits’ on June 25th 2021, this being the lead single of his Equals album. This song finds Ed Sheeran in a deep internal conflict about his bad habits, including his unhealthy lifestyle, nighttime drinking and partying, and how this is leading him to make poor choices. Ed Sheeran wrote this song with Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, alongside songwriter/producer Fred Again, in January 2021. He had just about finished the album when he felt like the record needed something unexpected.
 

 

 

  1. ABCDEFU - Gayle

Gayle was born and raised in Dallas Texas, she showed a love for music from an early age. After dropping 4 singles independently, the teenager signed a record deal with Atlantic. The label soon released “ABCDEFU” as Gayles first single with them. The song is an empowerment anthem, where Gayle goes into depth about her intense emotions after a breakup. Initially after the split she tried to be considerate to her ex, but after hearing he was saying nasty things about her, her feelings towards him changed. She said “that song came from a place of trying so hard to be the nice, respectful ex-girlfriend, to the point where it was negatively affecting me”. The song was released in august 2021, it blew up on TikTok a few months later causing the song to jump up the charts.

 

  1. Where Are You Now- Lost Frequencies/Calum Scott

Lost Frequencies and Calum Scott collaborate on this sad electro-pop smash hit about a lost love. Calum Scott starts off by recounting a romantic road trip, then later asking where their relationship went wrong. He loses touch with his former lover and wonders where they are now. Just over half a year after the song was released the track entered the UK Top 10 for the first time. They attribute its belated success to people meeting up again after lockdown. Scott told OfficialCharts.com “it's about reconnecting and bringing people back together again, that's what we have been missing these last two years right?”

Jessica Darrow rose to fame by playing Sarah in the film ‘Feast of the seven fishes”. The cuban-American actress auditioned for Disney’s animated movie “ Encanto”. The movie is about a Colombian family with magical powers, Jessica plays “Luisa” whose gift is that of superhuman strength. This reggaeton song is her solo piece. Jessica recorded the song 3 times. When she got the final recording a month later she was encouraged to lean into the emotional message being portrayed by the song.

“Easy on me” is a piano-led ballad written in the wake of her split from her husband, it was Adele's first solo release in 5 years. Adele wrote the song for her ‘30’ album in the year of her separation. It was officially the first tune that Adele had penned for the record, writing nothing for 6 months after she felt that she had said it all in “Easy on me”. Adele wrote the song alongside its producer Greg Kurstin. The song made number 1 on the UK singles chart, this would make it Adele's 3rd visit to the UK summit. The song racked up 24 million streams in the UK in its first week. The single also lept to number 1 on its second week on the Hot 100, making Adele 5th leader with UK first-week chart sales totalling 261,000. It marked her third ‘Album Of The Year’ win at the Brits.

Sam Fender was born and raised in the northeastern English town of North Shields. ‘Seventeen Going Under’ finds Fender looking back at his teenage years, back when he was living with his mother and they were both struggling financially. Fender had considered many options, even illegal ones to try and help his living situation. However, Fender debuted this song live in August 2020 in Newcastle. ‘Seventeen Going Under’ debuted at number 1 on the UK Albums chart, earning Sam his second chart-topping UK album. The singer-songwriter's record reached 44,000 sales in its first week, outselling the rest of the top 10 combined.

Elton John and Dua Lipa collaborate on this club-ready single. It blends together 4 of Elton John's much-loved tracks for a song about a relationship that's gone icy. Dua Lipa had planted the seed of the collaboration when she invited Elton John for an instagram live discussion. Subsequently a friendship blossomed. This became Elton John's 68th career entry on the Hot 100 when it debuted at number 81 in august 2021. The song entered the UK Top 10, this meant Elton became the first artist to rack up a top 10 song in the UK in 6 different decades. “Cold heart” climbed to number 1 on the uk singles chart after 3 consecutive weeks at number 2. This marked Elton John's 8th visit to the Uk summit and his first in 16 years. Dua Lipa achieved her 3rd UK number 1 with this song.
